Ground Safety for Marines (GSM)

Course Description

The Ground Safety for Marines (GSM) course provides instruction on basic concepts/techniques for managing unit-level Marine Corps Safety & Occupational Health (SOH) programs, hazard identification and controls, and conducting unit safety inspections. The course includes an introduction to the Marine Corps Safety Management System and OSHA; application of OSHA General Industry standards (29 CFR 1910); personal protective equipment (PPE); hazard recognition and mitigation; risk management; mishap investigation fundamentals; and mishap reporting procedures. All personnel appointed as Ground Safety Officers/Ground Safety Managers are required to complete the Ground Safety for Marines (GSM) course within 90 days of assignment.

 

Target Audience

The target population for GSM includes USMC/USN E-6 to E-8 and O-1 to O-5 or GS civilian equivalent appointed in writing as their command’s Ground Safety Officer/Ground Safety Manager. All personnel must have at least 12 months remaining in their billet from the course completion date.

Course dates are available on the Maines Ground Safety page. Personnel wishing to register for this course must contact the schoolhouse directly for registration procedures. Safety Division does NOT register students for GSM.

Required registration Information

All personnel must complete the Distance Learning (DL) Risk Management modules on MarineNet (SDRMGTxxxx) and the Marine Corps Records Management Course within 12 months prior to course attendance. Personnel must provide copies of their prerequisite training completion certificates and GSO/GSM appointment letter to the GSM course manager prior to reporting to class.
