U.S. Navy Hospital Corpsman 1st Class Kepono Gowan, a native of Honolulu, Hawaii, and a special operations independent duty corpsman with 2d Reconnaissance Battalion, 2d Marine Division, skis during Patrol Course Winter in Bardufoss, Norway, Jan. 15, 2025. During the course, Norwegian Army Soldiers with the Long Range Reconnaissance Patrol Squadron led Marines through a variety of training exercises, improving the individual Marines capability to operate and survive in arctic environments. U.S. Marines are in Norway as part of Exercise Joint Viking 25, a Norwegian military exercise focusing on arctic cold-weather training and military-to-military engagements. The exercise demonstrates the Marine Corps' unique ability to rapidly deploy during a crisis and aims to enhance interoperability between the U.S. Marine Corps and NATO allies and partners.
