Since the 1960s, safety specialists have referred to the time period between Memorial Day weekend and Labor Day weekend as the "Critical Days of Summer" due to the well-recognized trend of increased risk and resulting mishaps. To focus on risk management initiatives and increase awareness among Sailors and Marines, the Department of the Navy sponsors an annual summer safety campaign that is kicked off for the Memorial Day holiday and runs through the Labor Day holiday. The Marine Corps has incorporated "Warrior Preservation" as an overarching campaign slogan for all seasonal safety campaigns.
